The suggestion that it’s time to remove IT from the boardroom agenda may seem counterintuitive. We in the information technology industry have been working very hard for the last ten years to raise the profile of IT into a boardroom issue.
Sadly, IT has too often hit the boardroom when things have gone wrong, such as projects being delayed, budgets overrunning or mission critical systems going down.
As a result, many boards view IT as a constant headache that increases costs and upsets not just users but customers as well. This is not great for our profession: if we only make the board when it’s bad news.
So perhaps now we should be fighting to get IT off the boardroom agenda. IT should be off the agenda as a problem and as a technical agenda item.
Instead, it should be recognised as a service that helps to transform the business and drive sustainable competitive advantage.
This site, which has been put together by VMware in the UK, explores this topic in more detail. There is a white paper to download where you can read more about removing IT from the boardroom agenda and understand how other organisations have achieved this goal using virtualization and cloud computing. There’s also a video from our Chief Operating Officer, Tod Nielsen, and a sharable slideshow.
We’d also love to hear what you think. If you write or blog about this subject, we’ll try and include a link to your article on the experts section of this site. So please let us know you thoughts via the 'experts' section. |
